The State of California sued Robert Luna’s Sheriffs Department over ‘unconstitutional and inhumane’ conditions in LA County jails – including rats, spoiled meals, no clean water, and a shocking number of inmate deaths. Luna had years of warnings and did nothing.
Robert Luna campaigned on transparency – then spent his term shutting it down. He blocked the county’s own Inspector General from investigating misconduct, ignored his recommendations, and the watchdog ultimately resigned in protest.
Under Robert Luna, deputies are being told to sit back, respond only when called, and avoid proactive engagement. The result: criminals operate freely, preying on our community without consequence.

One of Alex Villanueva’s first acts as Sheriff was implementing body-worn cameras countywide, delivering on his commitment to transparency and accountability from day one.
When Alex Villanueva took office, the Sheriff’s Department had a $101 million budget deficit. When he left, it was a $74 million surplus – without cutting a single service or weakening operations.
When Alex Villanueva uncovered corruption in local government, he did not look the other way, he built a unit to fight it, taking on overreaching mandates and shady dealings between the County and private contractors.
As Sheriff, Alex Villanueva cleaned up homeless encampments and got people off the streets and into shelters, helping to improve the quality of life for both unhoused individuals and the surrounding communities.
